Project READ Literacy Network is the umbrella organization of literacy and essential skills in Waterloo-Wellington. Our mission is to provide any adult or family in Waterloo-Wellington with access to literacy training. We achieve this through knowledge building, knowledge exchange and assessment and development of knowledge and skills.
Mission: The Literacy Group develops and delivers accessible and effective literacy programs for adults in the Waterloo Region. Vision: Every person in the Waterloo Region has access to the resources they need to build skills that will empower them to engage fully in their community.
Low literacy affects 24% of the adult population in Waterloo-Wellington. That means they cannot read the dosage found on medications.
1 in 4 adults in our community do not have the skills to get and keep a job.
An adult with literacy barriers is 2.5 times more likely to face unemployment. The resulting impact on the community is a 4.8% increase of applications for government assistance in 2016/17.
